Rinspeed Oasis, Self-Driving Car of Tomorrow

Swiss car maker Rinspeed has revealed its vision for the tomorrow’s driving with the new concept model Oasis. The project explores new ways of owning and operating a car, realizing the principles of carsharing. The Oasis allows different scenarios: it can be a shopping cart in the morning, a shipping services counter for a parcel service in the afternoon, and a pizza delivery vehicle at night. And, of course, it can be booked for everyday commuting. The special app even allows the potential passengers to choose one of the available cars based on each other’s interests and professions.

To give a driver an opportunity to focus on a conversation with a passenger or surfing the web, the Oasis features a self-driving mode. Using different sensors, the car captures a 360‐degree view of its surroundings with pinpoint precision. Thanks to vehicle‐to‐vehicle communication, it can even look around corners and obstacles. This sensor fusion is then used to compute the safe driving maneuver.

While the Oasis is moving, the passengers are able to exchange and share news on social media channels using a 5K widescreen display with voice and gesture control. To provide a welcoming and relaxing atmosphere, the interior space of the Oasis is designed to be a kind of a modern living room, with armchairs, sideboard, and TV. There is even a small garden plot behind the windshield with enough space for growing radishes or little Bonsai trees. However, the Oasis can be also used as a mobile office, complete with necessary office software and Skype video telephony with live translation. The steering wheel folds flat, turning into a keyboard or work surface.

Despite the Rinspeed Oasis looks too futuristic, it utilizes the technologies that are already available. Also, the company is going to show a working prototype of the Oasis at the CES Las Vegas from January 4 through 7, 2017 and from January 9 through 22, 2017 at the NAIAS in Detroit.
